We implement an emergent play-based curriculum, where children are supported to actively explore and learn about themselves and how the world around them works. This play-based curriculum is emergent because it emerges from the children’s interests. It is about supporting children to develop skills, knowledge and dispositions that are useful and meaningful in their lives and that build their ability to be skilful members of their community.
It sees learning as complex and holistic rather than a step by step approach to acquiring knowledge and skills. It recognises that children learn as they engage in activity and relationships with others. Play is central to children’s learning because children’s play is their mechanism for learning about the world. The curriculum is flexible and can respond to children’s emerging interests, their questions drive it.
In a play based curriculum, the emphasis is on process rather than outcome, that is, children learn by doing and interacting. They are supported to develop a sense of well-being, identity and belonging and the skills,knowledge and dispositions for communicating ,exploring and thinking – the four themes of Aistear.
We currently offer two sessions, morning and afternoon. Our morning session runs from 9.00 – 12.00 and is for the older children who are in their second ECCE year. Our afternoon session runs from 12.30 – 3.30 and is for the younger children who are in their first ECCE year (children must be toilet trained before starting). We operate separate waiting lists for each session.

A place in the preschool does not automatically lead to a place in the main school for Junior Infants. A separate application for the main school needs to be submitted.
